I keep Steve Gevurtz's bronzes to a small group on purpose — four pieces, cast in numbered editions of fifteen and twenty-five, from a sculptor who didn't pick up clay until he was fifty-three.

Forty years in business, then a decade in bronze

Gevurtz spent more than forty years in the business world before he sculpted anything — restaurant management, teaching, sales and marketing, business consulting, running a computer company. He started taking drawing and portraiture classes in 2002, in Spokane, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and New York, studying anatomy texts on his own at night. By 2005 he'd put the paints away for good, bought his first block of clay, and gone to work at a foundry in North Idaho to learn casting and patina firsthand. He's completed more than twenty-five limited-edition and commissioned bronzes since, been featured in American Art Collector and Fine Art Connoisseur, and shown in galleries from Santa Fe to Spokane. He works out of a lakeside studio in Sandpoint, Idaho.

His figures are caught in a specific gesture rather than a dramatic pose — he's described his own aim as finding it in "the position of a hand, the tilt of a head, the strain of a muscle."

All four bronzes are priced at $12,500 and cast on black granite bases. Head In the Clouds (2017, edition of 25, 33 x 15 x 15 inches) comes in Classic Bronze or an Antique White finish made to order in 60 to 90 days. Cast Your Fate to the Wind (2016, edition of 15, 27 x 22 x 7, one-third life size) offers the same two finish options. Take Flight (2016, edition of 25, one-third life size) and The Arrival — full title "Princess Myrna Arrives to Oversee a Return to Sanity" (2015, edition of 25, 28 x 22 x 11) — round out the four.
